We started with a plan to build
a room that used regional materials to give it a sound that reflects
Vancouver Island. The difussion walls were built using local river rock
to make the space sound larger. One side of the room is treated with
western red and yellow cedar, and where the drums sit are vertical cedar
offcuts on a backing of hemp burlap. Behind the fabric treatments and
a wall quilt made by Doug's mother are bass traps to tame the lo-mid
frequency accents inherent in a room this size. To maximize the floor
to ceiling height the concrete floor was etched, stained in a marble
pattern and sealed. The end result is a warm, inviting and great sounding
room to create in!
